Development of a biomass gasifier as well as a heat exchanger unit that will be able to provide a sustainable heat source for industrial and agricultural applications.
This biomass gasifier is a green alternative to common practice in the industry such as electrical heating and the burning of fossil fuels. A huge advantage with gasification is the large variety of feedstocks that can be used, this is because of the high efficiency with which the gasification process extracts the energy from the feedstock. Feedstocks that are readily available in KwaZulu Natal include bagasse, forestry residue, corn cobs, pelletized sawdust and agricultural waste. KwaZulu Natal has a number of industrial areas where the common practice is to use wood or paraffin burners in process heating and the production of steam. The production of steam as well as any other industrial heating will be achieved through a heat exchanger. The use of a heat exchanger that is specifically designed to be used with a biomass gasifier will provide much higher efficiency than the heat transfer methods currently being used.
