Overview of research project
The purpose of this study is to develop an analytical test method for the detection and quantification of SARS-CoV-2 RNA fragments in sewer wastewater, using a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer. With this technology, we intend to obtain test results within a few minutes, thus enabling us to confirm the presence or absence of SARS-CoV-2 and measure viral load in the water. Introducing this technology will facilitate rapid detection and mapping of the Covid-19 epidemic in communities, which can aid authorities to implement strategies to prevent its spread swiftly. The developed analytical test method will further be assessed for detection and quantification of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in human saliva and urine. A detailed proposal of this project is available on request.
